SESSION 1: Strategies for Inclusive Learning: Small-Group Instruction
Our diverse students must gain proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as in content-area learning. In this session, participants will examine ways to target the literacy and content-area needs of all students by using a variety of small-group instructional settings to support a variety of backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities.
This interactive session will highlight instructional practices that provide access to grade-level standards and topics for diverse students, as they collaborate and engage in age-appropriate instruction. Participants will gain an understanding of how to value the needs of all learners as they develop pride in themselves as learners and an understanding and acceptance of the needs of others. Participants will focus on ways to create mini-lessons that explicitly foster each student’s ability grow and to meet higher expectations.
SESSION 2: Teaching for Transfer: Building Real World Connections
This presentation will focus on effective pathways from awareness to transfer by encouraging diverse learners to participate in collaborative academic conversations. Participants will examine ways to adapt lessons to meet the needs of diverse students by providing purposeful modeling by the teacher, as well as language, vocabulary, and content-area supports for maximizing the quality of students’ discussions. Emphasis will be placed on supporting students’ habits, skills, and ideas to promote quality collaborative conversations.
Participants will work with partners or in small groups to discuss and plan appropriate ways to model and scaffold a collaborative conversation about a content-area topic. The presentation will also include opportunities for participants to design lessons that foster collaboration, as well as the transfer of targeted skills and strategies.
