IL Workshop: OVERCOMING BIAS IN THE CLASSROOM with Alexs Pate
October 24 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pmFREE
Capstone Publishing, along with Custom Education Solutions, invites you to a morning celebrating community engagement and overcoming unconscious bias in the classroom.
Author Alexs Pate helps educators address unconscious biases and see through student behavior to build strong, empathetic relationships with children. His new book, Being You, is rooted in his dreams for his own kids and the kids he has worked with. It acknowledges that we are all caught up together in a harsh system that labels and limits children, but it also lights a way out of it, encouraging children to be seen for who they really are—not just who they’re told to be—and challenges adults to respond with clear eyes.
Capstone will give a behind-the-scenes look at how a publishing company approaches the creation of culturally relevant literature, such as Being You, that provides mirrors and windows for students, as well as provide a sneak-peek at new characters and series currently in development.
Our team will offer strategies on evaluating classroom libraries and bookrooms for bias, as well as incorporating diversity into your balanced literacy resources.
Check-in will start at 8:00 a.m.
Coffee & pastries will be provided.
